With the museum’s façade undergoing renovation, Mama Magnet was invited to use the construction hoardings as a canvas to curate an exhibition. Working closely with five local artists to open a portal of memories, we illustrated the role toys have played in shaping Singaporeans’ identity.
From honouring the art of toy-making to the thrills of toy-collecting, the exhibition surveys iconic phenomena from the early 2000’s such as Singapore’s Hello Kitty craze and the serious chatter at China Square Central’s flea markets. It offers perspectives on toy industries and local histories, from both a cultural and commercial lens.
Play:Date – Unlocking Cabinets Of Play runs for 6 months, till January 2025. Artworks are digital prints on vinyl stickers, each fitted with a tactile element to reel audiences in for a close-up.
